What is food-only mode?
Food-only mode is a special setting for the Easy Diet Diary app. It can only be activated by a professional (like a researcher or clinician) using Foodworks.online when they invite their client or participant to connect their Easy Diet Diary account.
When food-only mode is active, the Easy Diet Diary user:
- Cannot see the energy (calories/kilojoules) or nutrient breakdown (protein, fat, carbohydrate and micronutrient) of the foods they log.
- Cannot track their weight within the app.
- Cannot view weight history or energy intake graphs.
- Cannot enter or view personal profile details like sex, height, or weight.
- Cannot set energy or weight goals within the app.
Important: An Easy Diet Diary user cannot activate food-only mode themselves. This mode only functions when the app is connected to a professional's Foodworks.online account, and the professional enabled it during the invitation process.
See below an example of what Easy Diet Diary looks like to a user with food-only mode enabled.
Who should use food-only mode?
Food-only mode is designed for professionals using Foodworks.online in specific situations:
- Researchers: If you are conducting a study and need participants to log their food intake using Easy Diet Diary without being influenced by seeing the nutritional data, food-only mode is ideal.
- Clinicians (such as dietitians or nutritionists): If you want your clients to use Easy Diet Diary purely for tracking food types and amounts, but prefer to manage the analysis of energy, nutrients, and weight goals yourself (perhaps to reduce client anxiety or focus), food-only mode allows this.
Essentially, it's for professionals who need to monitor dietary intake via Easy Diet Diary but want to restrict the information visible to their client or participant within the app.
How do I use food-only mode?
Food-only mode can be enabled when you invite your client to connect their Easy Diet Diary account to Foodworks.online. When linking the client, simply check the box Enable food-only mode. Detailed instructions are below.
Food-only mode can only be enabled when you first link the client in Foodworks.online. If you wish to enable food-only mode on an existing client that already has their Easy Diet Diary account connected to Foodworks.online, you must first unlink the client and then invite them to connect again.
Linking a Foodworks Client to an Easy Diet Diary user
First, create a client in Foodworks. To create a client:
- Open Foodworks, then open or create a Professional workspace.
- In the navigation pane, click + Create new resource or client and select Client.
- Enter the client's name and click Create.
In this first step, consider adding other profile details like age, sex, weight, height, physical activity, or pregnancy status. You can also come back and edit these details later.
For more information about creating a client, see Create a client – Overview.
Link to Easy Diet Diary user:
- Open the client and click Link with EDD user.
- Enter the user's email address.
- Optional - Check Enable food-only mode to limit the information the Easy Diet Diary user can see.
- Click Send invitation.
- Existing user: If the email is associated with an Easy Diet Diary account, the user will be prompted to connect upon the next app launch.
- New user: The user will be prompted to connect upon creating an account with this email address.
Unlinking a Foodworks Client from an Easy Diet Diary user
Unlink in Foodworks
- Open Foodworks and select the workspace containing the client.
- In the navigation pane, select the linked client.
- Click Unlink with EDD user.
- Click Remove link.
When you unlink your client which you had enabled food-only mode for, their Easy Diet Diary app returns to the regular features and the user will now be able to view their energy and nutrient breakdowns and view and track their weight.
What happened to the 'Research Food Diary' app?
The food-only mode feature in Easy Diet Diary replaces the older, standalone app called 'Research Food Diary'.
- Key Difference: Food-only mode integrates directly with Foodworks.online, allowing seamless data transfer. The old 'Research Food Diary' app did not connect to Foodworks.online.
- Current Status: The 'Research Food Diary' app is no longer being updated and is not recommended for use in new studies or clinical workflows.
Attention FoodWorks 10 Users: If you are still using the old 'Research Food Diary' app with FoodWorks 10, please contact our support team at edd@xyris.com.au for information and guidance on transitioning.
