Creating an allergen matrix in Foodworks - A worked example

This article applies to the following workspace types

Nutrition Labelling Enterprise

This example shows you how to use advanced filtering and advanced export to create an allergen matrix for every raw material in your workspace tagged Private label.

The finished export has one row per raw material and one column per allergen, so you can review and compare allergen information at a glance. You'll also save the filter and export template, so you can produce an updated matrix whenever you need one.

Step 1: Create a filter for your raw materials

  1. Go to Workspace settings, select Export data, then select the Filters tab.
  2. Select + New filter.
  3. Name the filter Private label raw materials.
  4. Select Add condition and set Resource type is Raw material.
  5. Select Add condition again and set Tags includes Private label.
  6. Set the group to Match all, so resources must meet both conditions.
  7. Save the filter.

For more information, see Find resources with advanced filtering.

Step 2: Run the filter and review the results

  1. On the Filters tab, open the Private label raw materials card menu and select Run filter.
  2. When the status is Complete, open the result and check the list of matching raw materials.
  3. Select Export. This starts an export using the resources your filter found.

Step 3: Create an allergen matrix export template

  1. In the Results step, check the raw materials you want to include are selected, then select Next.
  2. In the Template step, create a new export template.
  3. In the Files panel, make sure ingredients.csv and ingredientcontributions.csv are not ticked. Everything the matrix needs is in resources.csv.
  4. In the column list on the left, expand Fields and tick Name, and ID 1 if you use internal codes for your raw materials.
  5. Expand Nutrients & components and tick each allergen you need. Foodworks includes gluten and the gluten-containing cereals (wheat, rye, barley and oats), crustacean, egg, fish, mollusc, milk, peanut, soy, sesame, lupin, each tree nut (almond, Brazil nut, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, pecan, pine nut, pistachio and walnut) and added sulphites.
  6. In the Nutrient basis dropdown, make sure only per 100g is ticked.
  7. Drag the selected columns into order, with Name and ID 1 first, followed by the allergens.
  8. Select Save export template for reuse and name it Raw material allergen matrix.

Tip: Allergen values are the same for every nutrient basis. Selecting only one basis gives you one column per allergen.

For more information, see Advanced export.

Step 4: Run and download the export

  1. Select Run and review your filter, filter results and export template.
  2. Select Start export.
  3. On the Exports tab, wait for the status to change to Complete, then download the file.

Because the export contains only resources.csv, it downloads as a CSV file.

Step 5: Review your allergen matrix

Open the CSV file in Excel or another spreadsheet application. It has one row per raw material, with each allergen in its own column. For example:

Name Gluten Wheat Milk Soy Sesame
Raw material A Yes Yes No No No
Raw material B No No Yes No No
Raw material C No No No Yes No
Raw material D No No No No Yes

This table is an illustration. Your export reflects the allergen information recorded in your workspace.

Important: If an allergen is not enabled in your workspace, its column is blank. A blank value does not mean the allergen is absent. Check that every allergen you need is enabled before you run the export.

Step 6: Update your allergen matrix

Reuse your saved filter and template whenever you need an up-to-date matrix:

  1. Go to Workspace settings, select Export data, then select the Filters tab.
  2. Run the Private label raw materials filter.
  3. When the run is complete, open the result and select Export.
  4. Select the Raw material allergen matrix template.
  5. Start the export and download the CSV.

Because the filter runs again, the new matrix includes any raw materials tagged Private label since your last export.
