About Health Star Ratings

Nutrition Labelling

The Health Star Rating (HSR) is a voluntary front-of-pack labelling system that rates the overall nutritional profile of a packaged food from ½ to 5 stars. If your product carries a Nutrition Information Panel (NIP), it's worth considering an HSR.

Foodworks calculates the HSR from your recipe's ingredients and provides the HSR graphics for your labels. See Generating Health Star Ratings.

How the HSR is calculated

  • Baseline points are based on energy, saturated fat, total sugars and sodium.
  • Modifying points are based on:
    • fruit, vegetables, nuts and legumes (FVNL), including concentrated fruit and vegetables (V points)
    • protein (P points)
    • fibre (F points)
  • Final points are the baseline points minus the modifying points.
  • The star rating is worked out from the final points and the food's HSR category. Most foods are category 2, unless they are a dairy food, a beverage, or an oil or spread.

For full details, see the Health Star Rating website.
